Athens. The capital of Greece. The city of the Acropolis, but also the city of the 2004 Olympic Games. Here live approx. 4 million people, a lot when you consider that Greece has not much more than 10 million inhabitants. Athens has an old classic center that lies at the foot of the Acropolis, definitely worth a visit. The real center of the capital is Omonia square, from the air you can clearly see that all the main roads lead to this square. Another famous square is Syntagma, here the parliament is seated and for that reason it is probably a popular place for events and demonstrations. Close are also the royal gardens, a must for those who are looking for some peace and green in the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Once in Athens then you must visit the Acropolis. This ancient and sacred center of the Greek capital has survived more than 2 millennia and towers majestically and impressively over Athens. The museum at the Acropolis was rebuilt a few years ago and now exudes a fresh and modern atmosphere (http://www.theacropolismuseum.gr). Definitely worth a visit.

Other famous museums include: The Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art, The Islamic Art Museum of Athens, The Archaeological Museum of Athens, the Benaki Museum, Museum of the City of Athens and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. For an overview of all the museums you can visit (http://www.athens-today.com). Athens is also a great city for shopping. There are large malls (www.themallathens.gr) but also chic boutiques in Kolonaki, and not to forget the famous flea market of Monasteraki near the Acropolis.
